- U.S. Public Health Service Oral Health Coordinating Committee created
Background
The U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) Oral Health Coordinating Committee (OHCC) is charged with assisting PHS in meeting its responsibility to promote the public’s oral health through coordination of oral health policy, research, and actions within PHS, across federal agencies, and between public and private sectors.
PHS OHCC is also charged to provide direction for PHS oral health policy through review and evaluation of relevant PHS and agency documents, such as Oral Health in America: A Report of the Surgeon General and A National Call to Action to Promote Oral Health. PHS OHCC promotes oral health initiatives and serves as a liaison to relevant federal and non-federal agencies.
Impact
OHCC members represent a cross section of the interests, concerns, and responsibilities of other oral health professionals in agencies and organizations staffed by PHS personnel. OHCC took responsibility for coordinating programmatic and oral health issues, allowing the Dental Professional Advisory Committee to concentrate on the dental work force in PHS. See 1983: U.S. Public Health Service Dental Professional Advisory Committee created.
