Increasing the Proportion of Oral and Oropharyngeal Cancers Detected at the Earliest Stage (OH-7)
The Federal Healthy People 2030 Oral Health Workgroup, in collaboration with the Academy of General Dentistry and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, present this seventh webinar in a series on Healthy People oral health objectives. Oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cancer is a clinically aggressive malignancy with significant morbidity and mortality. Despite therapeutic advances, long-term survival is modest. As such, early detection and prevention are critical components for improving clinical outcomes. This webinar will discuss the etiologic factors associated with SCC and the American Dental Association Clinical Oral Cancer Screening Guidelines. Register.

What Emergency Medicine Providers Want Dentists to Know About Opioids

2025 Medicaid and CHIP Child and Adult Core Set Annual Review
Each year, the Child and Adult Core Sets for the Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) Quality Measurement Program undergo a review. The Core Sets are key indicators of the quality of health care that Medicaid and CHIP beneficiaries receive. This year’s review will focus on updates to the 2025 Child and Adult Core Sets. In order to support states’ efforts to meet the upcoming 2024 mandatory reporting requirements and to provide sufficient time for states to prepare, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released both the 2023 and 2024 Child and Adult Core Health Care Quality Measurement Sets based on the recommendations of the 2023 Child and Adult Core Set Annual Review. SDF and Beyond: Patient-Centered Brush-On Therapies for Caries Management
This is a webinar from the CareQuest Institute for Oral Health. Minimally invasive care (MIC) in dentistry is an alternative to the traditional surgical manner of managing and treating dental caries. MIC, which aims to keep teeth functional throughout a person’s lifespan by preserving natural tooth structure, has evolved rapidly since silver diamine fluoride (SDF) was introduced in the United States in 2015. Along with SDF, which is becoming more popular, MIC has grown to include non-staining peptide-guided enamel regeneration P11-4 and povidone iodine. This webinar, hosted by the American Academy of Pediatrics in collaboration with the American Institute for Dental Public Health and moderated by the VHA, is the third in a series of webinars designed to promote the 11 Healthy People 2030 Oral Health Objectives. 44.5 percent of U.S. adults 45 years of age and older have moderate or severe periodontal disease, and the Healthy People 2030 target is to reduce this proportion to 39.3 percent. Federal Opportunities to Support Dental Therapy
Dental therapy is often thought of as an issue for state governments, but there are many federal policies that can support the expansion of dental therapists in the U.S. The National Partnership for Dental Therapy presents this webinar about a new report from a federal advisory committee examining the issue of dental therapy and its recommendations for how the federal government can support the training and deployment of dental therapists. Supporting Dental Therapy through Title VII Training Programs: A Meaningful Strategy for Implementing Equitable Oral Health Care was authored by the Advisory Committee on Training in Primary Care Medicine and Dentistry, which advises the Department of Health and Human Services on improving public health measures.

A New Tool for Tracking Medicaid Adult Dental Benefits Across States
This webinar from the CareQuest Institute for Oral Health introduces the Medicaid Adult Dental Coverage Checker, an interactive tool for policymakers, administrators, and advocates. It shows where a given state’s Medicaid adult dental benefits package falls on a continuum from no dental benefits to extensive benefits, helping identify areas for improvement and expansion. It looks at coverage of specific procedures and services, including allowed frequency, in eight service categories. The coverage checker displays results that were self-reported by state dental directors or their equivalentin a survey conducted in spring 2020. The survey, known as the Rubric for Assessing Extensiveness of State Medicaid Adult Dental Benefits, was developed in partnership with the American Dental Association Health Policy Institute, Center for Health Care Strategies, National Academy for State Health Policy, CareQuest Institute, and advisory committee members. Data Stories Webinar: Mapping Dnetal Deserts–Oral Health Equity in Los Angeles County
This webinar is presented by the Oral Health Progress and Equity Network as part of its webinar series, Leveraging Data to Advance Oral Health Equity.Assessing equitable access to affordable dental care in county as diverse and population-dense as Los Angeles County (LAC) is problematic. The LAC Oral Health Program used GIS mapping to overlay population density, poverty levels, and safety-net dental clinic staffing to spatially analyze Dental Deserts; defined as high-risk areas with limited access to affordable dental care. Fifty different square mile blocks were identified as Dental Deserts with the majority being in southcentral LAC. These findings are being used to build support for expanding dental services in the Dental Deserts. Recording.

The Health Resources and Services Administration Uniform Data System Sealant Measure: 2021 Annual Update
Due to the impacts of COVID-19, the number of children receiving sealants in health centers decreased from almost 57% in 2019 to 48.68% in 2020. Thousands of children ages 6-9 did not receive preventive sealants, putting their molars at risk for cavities and a life-long cycle of dental treatment. Data-Driven Insights on Medicaid Dental Care Programs: New Research from the Health Policy Institute (HPI)
This webinar launches new HPI research related to dental care in state Medicaid programs. First, HPI releases 50-state analysis of Medicaid reimbursement rates for dental care services, comparing Medicaid reimbursement to private dental insurance rates. This is for both child dental services (all 50 states) and adult dental services (states with adult dental benefits in Medicaid). Next, they will present a revised methodology for measuring dentist participation in Medicaid using national claims data and incorporating an analysis of number of Medicaid patients served. Finally, they will present a new journal article that compares dental care use patterns among Medicaid-insured and privately insured children and adults. COVID-19 Airborne Precautions and Ventilation
The final webinar in a 4-part course supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Oral Health will provide an overview of the measures clinical facilities should consider to mitigate the transmission risk of diseases that may be carried in the aerosols created by dental devices. Supporting Community Engaged Oral Health Systems
California Northstate University and Children Now present a year-end virtual symposium on supporting community-engaged oral health systems. The purpose of this meeting is to disseminate lessons that have been learned from a decade of work with virtual dental home systems and dental care coordination activities within the California Dental Transformation Initiative Local Dental Pilot Projects and other programs. In addition, advocacy opportunities in these areas for 2021 will be discussed. Though this meeting will focus on efforts in California, programs from other states may find the information presented useful.

NNOHA UDS Sealant Webinar
This annual webinar from NNOHA will highlight the most successful strategies to increase the percentage of children receiving sealants and increase the HRSA UDS sealants measure percentage. The webinar will review content from the NNOHA Annual Conference workshops. Results and trends from the last five years of data for the measure will be shared. Recent changes to the measure denominator specifications will be reviewed. Work-arounds to address data collection and reporting will be briefly described for those health centers that are not yet using an EDR vendor-developed solution to collect the data elements of the measure (age, a patient of record, risk status, exclusions, and sealants placed). Oral Health Policy & Advocacy: A Health Equity Case Study
This webinar sponsored by The Uprising for Black Lives will feature a panel of experienced oral health advocates and community organizers who are working to dismantle systemic racism and discrimination in oral health in a way that centers – and is responsive to – the needs of the community, using dental therapy as a case study. Oral health starts – long before dental problems or other related health issues arise – where people live, work and play and with the policies that shape access to care. Structural racism has created deep inequities in access to care and oral health outcomes that directly affect Black, American Indian and Alaska Native, and Latinx populations. The Movement for Black Lives calls us to work for a health care system that meets the full health needs of Black communities. Given the existence of deep oral health inequities, investing in community-based solutions and a community-driven workforce is essential.

Public Health Approaches to Children’s Oral Health During COVID-19
The National Conference of State Legislatures has a "Hot Topics" public health webinar series. This December 4 webinar will cover research, state policies and national initiatives around public health approaches to maintaining access to children’s oral health services. Between March and May of this year, children in Medicaid received over 7 million fewer dental services compared to the same period last year. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced sporadic closures to dental offices and limited community-based options for delivering children’s oral health services. Still, state public health strategies that address children’s oral health in settings such as schools, community health centers and mobile clinics provide options for policymakers to close gaps in care during the pandemic, particularly for vulnerable populations. Speakers include Paul Glassman, Sam Zwetchkenbaum (RI state dental director), and Rhonda Stokley (TX state dental director). Recording.
