Q: Do children with special health care needs have unique oral health needs?
Dr. Larry Salzmann responds.

A: Many do. Some children with special health care needs are very susceptible to early childhood caries, gum disease, or oral trauma. Others require medication or special diets that are detrimental to oral health. Some children have physical difficulty performing effective oral hygiene care at home. But if oral health care is started early and followed conscientiously, every child can enjoy optimal oral health.
