Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) Announces Partnership
with Head Start
The Office of Head Start (OHS)
has awarded a five-year, $10 million dollar contract to the AAPD
to establish dental homes for one million children enrolled annually
in OHS programs.

their 2008 campaign to raise awareness of the importance of
oral health, activities for children, and presentation resources.
» The American
Academy of Pediatrics has joined with television
personality and author Joan Lunden to help raise parents' awareness
about the importance of children's oral health and to teach
healthy oral care habits.
» The American
Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation has
posted a resource for new parent education, a children's activity
book, and information on the dental home.

of Health to develop this Web site, with support from the Anthem

school-based dental sealant program to prevent tooth decay in children. The
online manual, prepared by Nancy Carter with the assistance of
the American Association for Community

Resource Center, provides practical guidance for individuals who

Promote State Dental Periodicity Schedules
In late 2006,
the American Academy
of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) kicked off an initiative
to promote state adoption of dental
periodicity schedule consistent with AAPD guidelines.
AAPD sent a letter
to each state Medicaid director, and a supportive
letter was also distributed by the Medicaid/SCHIP

Oral Health Resource Guide is designed to assist health
professionals, educators, program administrators, and others working
to
promote and improve the oral health of pregnant women, infants, and
young children. The guide is divided into three sections: journal
articles that appeared in the literature between January 2004 and
November 2006; materials, such as curricula, fact sheets, guidelines,
reports, and audiovisual materials; and organizations, such as federal
agencies, professionals associations, and policy centers that may
serve
as additional resources.

Health Resource Bulletin: Volume XVI is the latest in a series
designed to stimulate thinking and creativity within the MCH community
by providing information about current materials of interest. Materials
listed in the bulletin address topics including dental sealants,

The Maternal and Child Health Bureau funded four Oral Health Institutes that
focused on developing and sustaining partnerships that improve oral health
outcomes.

Knowledge Path: Oral Health and Children and Adolescents
This guide points to high-quality resources that analyze data, describe effective
programs, and report on policy and research aimed at improving access to and
the quality of oral health for children and adolescents. Separate sections identify
resources on specific aspects of oral health including dental sealants, early
childhood caries, fluoride varnish, Head Start, child care, school-based education,
and school-based care. The final section lists oral health resources for consumers.
» Strategies
to Improve Health by Enhancing the Integration of Oral Health
and Maternal and Child Health Programs, a tip
sheet from OHRC, explains
how to improve oral and general health within the MCH population
by better integrating oral health activities and information
into state and local
MCH programs. Topics include the importance of oral health, the benefits of
integrating oral health and MCH activities, and areas for
collaboration.
» OHRC has converted A
Guide for Developing and Enhancing Community Oral Health
Programs, released earlier this year by the American
Association for Community Dental Programs, into interactive
Web pages. Now you can browse through the Guide and use
the links and other interactive features online.

Sealant Resource Guide, 2nd edition encourages
the exchange of information about dental sealants and promotes
their use to prevent dental caries. The guide is divided
into three sections. The first section lists journal articles
that appeared in the literature between January 2004 and
March 2006. The second section lists materials, including
books, curricula, fact/tip sheets, guidelines, manuals, reports,
papers, and CD-ROMs. The third section lists organizations,
including federal agencies, policy and resource centers,
and professional associations that may serve as resources.
