» Dental Hygienists and Head Start: What You Should Know and How You Can Help
This new tip sheet from OHRC provides information about how dental hygienists can help address the oral health needs of pregnant women, infants, and children enrolled in Head Start.

» American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) Announces Partnership with Head Start
The Office of Head Start (OHS) has awarded a five-year, $10 million dollar contract to the AAPD to establish dental homes for one million children enrolled annually in OHS programs.

February 2008: Children's Dental Health Month

» OHRC's Knowledge Path: Oral Health and Pregnant Women, Infants, Children and Adolescents has been updated for 2008. It describes current, high-quality resources that analyze data, describe effective programs, and report on policy and research.

» The American Dental Association has posted information about their 2008 campaign to raise awareness of the importance of oral health, activities for children, and presentation resources.

» The American Academy of Pediatrics has joined with television personality and author Joan Lunden to help raise parents' awareness about the importance of children's oral health and to teach healthy oral care habits.

» The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation has posted a resource for new parent education, a children's activity book, and information on the dental home.

This new fact sheet from OHRC provides tips that can help you write educational oral health materials that are easy for everyone to understand.

» National Primary Oral Health Care (NPOHC) Conference Features Sessions on Dental Sealants
Coordinating with Seal America: The Prevention Invention, 2nd edition, a series of sessions will address partnership opportunities between community and migrant health centers and school-based dental sealant programs. View presentations and abstracts from past NPOHC conferences.

» Ohio Dental Safety Net Information Center
OHRC worked in partnership with the Ohio Department of Health to develop this Web site, with support from the Anthem Foundation of Ohio. The site provides information necessary to start and maintain the operations and delivery of oral health care services in safety net dental clinics in Ohio.

» Bright Futures in Practice: Oral Health—Pocket Guide provides an overview of the publication Bright Futures in Practice: Oral Health and is designed to help health professionals implement specific oral health guidelines during pregnancy and postpartum, infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence.

» Knowledge Path: Oral Health and Children and Adolescents, an online guide, is updated annually to include general resources, resources on specific aspects of oral health, and resources for families.

» Bright Futures Toolbox highlights materials that advance the Bright Futures philosophy of promoting and improving the oral health of infants, children, and adolescents.

A Way with Words: Guidelines for Writing Oral Health Materials for Audiences with Limited Literacy provides simple tips to make the oral health materials you produce easier to understand.

This brochure instructs  parents and other caregivers on how to care for children's teeth, emphasizing the need for regular dental visits (examinations, cleanings, fluoride treatments, dental sealants, fillings) to keep teeth healthy.

We are pleased to announce the availability of Seal America: The Prevention Invention, 2nd Edition, an online manual designed to assist health professionals in initiating and implementing a school-based dental sealant program to prevent tooth decay in children. The online manual, prepared by Nancy Carter with the assistance of the American Association for Community Dental Programs and the National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center, provides practical guidance for individuals who wish to start a school-based dental sealant program.

» Head Start Oral Health Curricula at-a-Glance
This matrix prepared by the National Head Start Oral Heatlh Resource Center provides information about oral-health-related curricula appropriate for use in Head Start programs. For each curriculum, the matrix specifies the title, audience, topics, and availability.

The matrix is available to view as a PDF file, or to download as an Excel file to allow users to search and sort the information by category.

» Special Care: An Oral Health Professional’s Guide to Serving Young Children with Special Health Care Needs now offers continuing education (CE) credits
Four CE credits through the American Dental Hygienists' Association or through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Indian Health Service, will be awarded upon successful completion of this course. The course is free, but registration is required.

» Associations Promote State Dental Periodicity Schedules
In late 2006, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) kicked off an initiative to promote state adoption of dental periodicity schedule consistent with AAPD guidelines. AAPD sent a letter to each state Medicaid director, and a supportive letter was also distributed by the Medicaid/SCHIP Dental Association. Read more on AAPD's Web site.

» The Maternal Oral Health Resource Guide is designed to assist health
professionals, educators, program administrators, and others working to
promote and improve the oral health of pregnant women, infants, and
young children. The guide is divided into three sections: journal
articles that appeared in the literature between January 2004 and
November 2006; materials, such as curricula, fact sheets, guidelines,
reports, and audiovisual materials; and organizations, such as federal
agencies, professionals associations, and policy centers that may serve
as additional resources.

» Oral Health Resource Bulletin: Volume XVI is the latest in a series
designed to stimulate thinking and creativity within the MCH community
by providing information about current materials of interest. Materials
listed in the bulletin address topics including dental sealants, early
childhood caries, fluoride, oral injury and first aid, strategic
planning, Head Start, and Medicaid.

» Periodontal Health and Birth Outcomes
Highlights from the Washington, DC forum to address the relationship between periodontal health and birth outcomes. Meeting materials, including the agenda, selected presentations, and a link to the full text of a relevant 2006 journal article by Michalowicz et al have been posted.

» Oral Health Institute Reports Available
The Maternal and Child Health Bureau funded four Oral Health Institutes that focused on developing and sustaining partnerships that improve oral health outcomes.

» Updated Knowledge Path: Oral Health and Children and Adolescents
This guide points to high-quality resources that analyze data, describe effective programs, and report on policy and research aimed at improving access to and the quality of oral health for children and adolescents. Separate sections identify resources on specific aspects of oral health including dental sealants, early childhood caries, fluoride varnish, Head Start, child care, school-based education, and school-based care. The final section lists oral health resources for consumers

» Strategies to Improve Health by Enhancing the Integration of Oral Health and Maternal and Child Health Programs, a tip sheet from OHRC, explains how to improve oral and general health within the MCH population by better integrating oral health activities and information into state and local MCH programs. Topics include the importance of oral health, the benefits of integrating oral health and MCH activities, and areas for collaboration.

» OHRC has converted A Guide for Developing and Enhancing Community Oral Health Programs, released earlier this year by the American Association for Community Dental Programs, into interactive Web pages. Now you can browse through the Guide and use the links and other interactive features online.

» Dental Sealant Resource Guide, 2nd edition encourages the exchange of information about dental sealants and promotes their use to prevent dental caries. The guide is divided into three sections. The first section lists journal articles that appeared in the literature between January 2004 and March 2006. The second section lists materials, including books, curricula, fact/tip sheets, guidelines, manuals, reports, papers, and CD-ROMs. The third section lists organizations, including federal agencies, policy and resource centers, and professional associations that may serve as resources.

» Oral Health Resource Bulletin, Volume XV contains descriptions of brochures, posters, and fact sheets for consumers; materials from MCHB-funded institutes, Head Start oral health forums, the State Oral Health Collaborative Systems grantee meeting, and other conferences; policy-related fact sheets, briefs, and statements; education and training materials for health professionals; and materials from state- and community-based programs. A brief synopsis and acquisition information is provided for each item.
