This resource describes Wisconsin’s program to build a statewide system to promote oral health as part of overall health and to organize community resources to increase access to oral health care for children and adolescents with special health care needs. The resource outlines the following program services: training for dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants; education and training for children, parents, caregivers, and teachers; education for health professionals, including physicians and nurses; fluoride varnish and dental sealant programs; and targeted interactive case management to link families with services. Information for families is also available.

This statistical summary contains data on the content and access to fluoride in the public drinking water supply in Wisconsin; it provides total population counts and percentages on their access to fluoridated water. It includes data on water systems by fluoride status and deficient water systems by population. The fact sheet also contains the names of public water supply systems and sanitary districts in three lists: those that are adjusted for optimal content, those with a natural content above 0.7 parts per million, and those that are deficient and not adjusting the content.

This report presents the results of a study on access to dental care for low-income children in Illinois. The study addressed three areas: (1) a description of the supply, distribution, and characteristics of Illinois dentists, using American Dental Association data; (2) an analysis of dental services for Illinois Medicaid-enrolled children from March 1999 through February 2000; and (3) an analysis of steps taken by Illinois and six surrounding states (Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, and Wisconsin) to address the problems of low access to dental care for children with Medicaid. Eight policy recommendations for improving dental services to low-income children are presented. Statistics and references are also included.

These case studies present accounts of three organizations and their experiences in starting or expanding a dental project. The clinics described are the I. M. Sulzbacher Clinic, Jacksonville, Florida; the Interfaith Dental Clinic, Nashville, Tennessee; and the Harambee Dental Clinic, Madison, Wisconsin. The case studies discuss the genesis of the idea for each project, recruiting volunteers, and clinic operations.

This report discusses legislation on oral health care access by underserved persons as prepared during the 2001–2002 session of the legislature of Wisconsin. The report is divided into three parts: key provisions of the legislation; committee activity; and the legislation, which includes 2001 Senate Bill 166 and 2001 Assembly Bill 366 as well as 2001 Senate Bill 167 and 2001 Assembly Bill 367. Topics presented in the legislation include tuition assistance for dental students, oral health professionals in the public health administration regions, increases in reimbursement rates for medical assistance, reimbursements for topical fluoride treatments and water fluoridation, and licensing dentists and dental hygienists.

This report for policymakers provides an overview of oral health policy issues and challenges, and details initiatives in five states (Alabama, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Washington, and Wisconsin) that are working to improve oral health care for children. This report presents key findings from the Make Your Smile Count survey conducted to learn about the oral health status of children in third grade in Wisconsin. The survey was designed to (1) establish a baseline for monitoring children's oral health status; (2) assess the extent of children's oral health needs; and (3) focus the efforts of prevention programs, policies, and funding. Information on dental caries experience, the prevalence of dental sealants, and the need for urgent treatment is presented. Comparisons of the survey findings to Healthy People 2010 objectives and to other state survey findings are also provided.
