This report contains the results of a Nevada survey of the oral health status and treatment needs of 764 randomly selected public school students in grades 1 and 6. In addition to information about children's oral hygiene habits, the report includes sections that discuss the use of dental sealants, fluoridation, health professional access issues, and public funding. The survey was conducted for the Nevada State Health Division.

This position paper was presented at the Building Partnerships to Improve Children's Access to Medicaid Oral Health Services National Conference held on June 2-4, 1998, in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. It discusses the prevalence and severity of oral disease, the risk factors for oral disease, and the obstacles impeding access to oral health care for certain populations. It ends with the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors' commitment to partnership with federal and state agencies to address children's oral health problems.

This notebook was developed as background materials for the dental summit held on May10-11,1999 in Grantville, Pennsylvania. The summit focused on improving access to dental care for Medical Assistance recipients, with participation by major stakeholders in a collaborative process. Five workgroups organized around children, special needs populations, managed care, and provider inducements and quality met to discuss accessibility issues and make recommendations. Contents of the reference binder include a statement of the conference's vision, goals, and objectives; Pennsylvania regulations on the Medical Assistance Program and dental services; the Medical Assistance fee schedule; copies of invoice forms; and statistical charts. Several issue-related articles are also included in the summit materials.

These documents provide an overview of the burden of oral disease in the United States and federal and state efforts to address the problem. Topics include the efforts of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to support state-based programs, monitor oral health status, provide education and share expertise, support prevention science and new approaches, guide infection control in dentistry, and prevent oral cancer. Stories and description of state programs that can serve as examples are included.
