This resource describes the coordinated school health program (CSHP) model and provides tools to help professionals integrate oral health into CSHPs. This report describes issues for discussion in the planning, development, and implementation of an integrated statewide program to improve oral health in Pennsylvania in general and in areas in which oral health disparities are most evident in particular. Report sections include the status of oral health in Pennsylvania; the report preparation method; categories of health action, including communicable diseases, chronic diseases, family health, violence and injury, environmental health, and service delivery systems; disparities; special populations in the state; and service integration. Appendices include maps, tables, and charts providing statistical data on population and provider distribution and needs information.

This paper addresses the education and training that pediatricians and family physicians need to competently engage families in oral health guidance, prevention, and possible therapeutic oral health treatments. The paper presents background for each phase of the medical education process, examines oral-health-related educational requirements in physician training, provides physician surveys that assess the amount of training included in their education, and discusses physicians' knowledge of oral health issues and the incorporation of these issues into their practice. The paper then presents policy opportunities for improving oral health education for physicians and describes programs that focus on integrating oral health training into medical education.

This paper proposes aligning a variety of health professionals to achieve improvements in pediatric oral health and to share the responsibility for education about the prevention of oral disease. Section topics include an overview of the need for dental caries prevention in children; the role of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry; models of collaboration in supporting oral and general health; a review of existing collaborative efforts; and the partnering roles of various levels of government in supporting infrastructure enhancements, creating health policies, and offering guidance to achieve oral-health-related outcomes. The paper also includes statements of fact from numerous professional health organizations on oral health promotion and policies and positions and a review of de facto policies as illustrated by a review of funded programs throughout the nation. The final section reviews opportunities-in-waiting at the national and state levels. The appendix includes an extensive list of professional health organizations, their Web site addresses, and an indicator of health care and oral health policy positions.

This issue brief addresses issues in disparities in the oral health status of the maternal and child health (MCH) population. The brief focuses on children and adolescents from families with low incomes, children and adolescents from minority groups, and the role of state public health agencies in identifying opportunities to integrate oral health into MCH programs. The brief provides examples of ways that state public health agencies are fostering relationships, highlighting efforts in five areas: (1) surveillance (Alaska, Colorado, Nevada, Ohio, and Wisconsin), (2) prenatal (Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming), (3) early childhood oral health (Alabama, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Texas), (4) increasing access to preventive care (Colorado, Connecticut, Oklahoma, Montana, Nebraska, and South Carolina), and (5) injury-prevention (Arkansas and Kentucky). This participant notebook contains materials from the Region 1 oral health meeting held on October 24-25, 2005, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. This final report presents findings from a five year (8/01-8/06) grant-funded project to address the problems of adolescent oral health inattention and lack of integration within the dental and public health communities by engaging the dental community and partnering with other provider groups. Problems addressed include the lack of (1) information on adolescent oral health; (2) organizational infrastructure and programming within and between dental organizations; and (3) inter-professional activity, public awareness, and policymaker action on adolescent oral health. This final report summarizes the Republic of the Marshall Islands' efforts to stabilize state oral health program activity, better integrate oral health into maternal and child health programs, and address women's and children's cross-cutting oral health needs with funding from the State Oral Health Collaborative Systems grant program for the period September 30, 2003, to August 31, 2007. The report contains information on the problem, goals and objectives, methodology, coordination, and evaluation. Additional information is included on the project's experience, regional and national significance, challenges and barriers, and products. Topics include screening, co-pay reduction, and oral health education for pregnant women; toothbrush distribution to pregnant women and infants and young children ages 6 months to 3 years; interdisciplinary education and training for dental assistants and nurses; and development of culturally sensitive messages using communitybased focus groups.
