This report offers an overview of the capacity of dental public health (DPH) to serve the public in order to stimulate the development of a blueprint for action. Topics include the rationale for and scope of dental public health; the structure and function of DPH today, including discussions of state and local DPH programs, professional education, participation of professional and voluntary organizations, assessing the value of DPH programs, and where DPH stands today. Additional topics include strengthening DPH by articulating goals for the future, earning support from policy makers and program administrators, ensuring recruitment and professional development, and other challenges and opportunities. References conclude the report.

This report describes the status of children's oral health in California, based on the results of a needs assessment conducted in 1993–94. The report presents the rationale for the assessment, describes its design, and presents and discusses the findings concerning infants, school-age children, and adolescents. The document also reviews existing state programs, specifically considers the need for fluoridation programs, and concludes with recommendations for improving the oral health of children in the state.

This information package contains materials about Project Mouthguard, a sports injury prevention program developed by the Illinois Department of Public Health. The package contains a pamphlet describing the importance of using mouthguards; a fact sheet on the program; samples of forms used to report orofacial and sports injuries; a fact sheet on the mouthguards; photocopies of journal articles on sports and orofacial injuries and on Project Mouthguard; a map providing contact information for regional public health offices in Illinois; a guide to establishing community mouth guard programs; and two versions of a videotape about the project and the significance of using mouthguards. The 12-minute version of the videotape is intended for use in high schools, the 9-minute version for grade schools.

This final report reviews and summarizes a community-based, culturally sensitive oral health project in Canim Lake, British Columbia. The project aimed to promote quality infant feeding and prevent early childhood caries in the Canim Lake Band, a Shuswap community of 500 members belonging to the First Nations group. The report summarizes the project and reviews the demonstration components (methodology, problems encountered, timetables), evaluation components (process, impact, and outcome), and project outcomes. Two of the projects implemented—a cradle loan project and construction of a smokehouse—were related to historical Shuswap traditions for comforting fussy babies. Appendices include a sample questionnaire and an evaluation form.

This final report summarizes and reviews a community-based oral health project involving the Vietnamese community of Vancouver, British Columbia. The project was designed to prevent tooth decay among the community's Vietnamese children, who are at high risk for early childhood caries. The report includes a brief summary of the project; demonstration components (methodology, problems encountered, timetables); significant findings; process, impact, and outcome evaluation components; and project outcomes. Specific projects involved individual counseling, an educational videotape for parents, and community outreach through presentations, print media, and radio interviews. Appendices include a follow-up survey and an evaluation questionnaire.

The purpose of this statistical note is to provide definitions and data collection specifications for objectives in Priority Area 13: Oral Health, one of 22 priority areas of Healthy People 2000. The text and operational definitions of the oral health objectives are presented, data issues are discussed, and references are cited for expanded discussions of the data systems used for the Healthy People 2000 national objectives. The appendices include questionnaire items used to measure the objectives, and a bibliography.

This report describes the benefits of global oral health awareness initiatives, demonstrates the efficacy of existing programs, and discusses clinical benefits accrued by children participating in the Bright Smiles, Bright Futures program. The report is divided into four sections. Section I explores a decade of scientific research on oral health programs. Section II describes Bright Smiles, Bright Futures, both in the United States and in other countries. Section III presents the protocol and results of a study of students in grade 3 in India who participated in Bright Smiles, Bright Futures. Section IV summarizes the report's major points.

This report describes the design and initial implementation stages of Michigan's Healthy Kids Dental program, covering the history of Michigan's approach to dental access problems.
