This resource provides information from annual questionnaires sent to oral health program directors in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S.-associated jurisdictions for tracking progress toward meeting Healthy People oral health objectives. Contents include an overview of the content, history, methods, limitations, permissions for use, and related links. Data from the five most recent synopses are available for generating lists, tables, or maps containing oral health summaries for each state and territory; states and territories that support an oral health program; the percentage of people with public water systems receiving fluoridated water; states and territories with a full-time dental director by year; and state and territorial trends in demographics, infrastructure, workforce, administration, budget, and programs across multiple years. The data collection instruments are also available from the website.

This manual was designed to aid Region II Head Start staff in fulfilling the specific oral health goals and requirements of the Head Start Program Performance Standards. These program performance standards call for the implementation of a plan to ensure that each child receives appropriate oral health care, and for the provision of an oral health education component. The manual is divided into chapters focusing on the health services advisory committee, enrollment, record keeping and tracking, working with dentists, financing oral health care and budgeting, special programs, oral health education, oral health emergencies, and fluorides. Appendices include consent forms and letters, a glossary of oral health terms, oral health education resource materials, and resource sections specific to New York and New Jersey. The manual is intended to be a resource for daily use and is presented in a loose-leaf format to allow the user to add new information when necessary. The forms and suggestions contained in the manual were developed in consultation with Head Start personnel, oral health consultants, and representatives of various provider groups.

The proceedings include an executive summary, a transcript of the meeting, and several appendices containing supplemental papers, materials, and a report on the meeting. References conclude the proceedings.

This guidebook is designed to further the goal of the National Health Service Corps to increase services to populations in underserved areas by helping candidates prepare applications to qualify as federally designated dental health professional shortage areas (HPSAs). This teaching guide was prepared for use in Alaska with parents or health professionals. When used with parents, it covers basic topics in oral hygiene and oral health including primary teeth, abscesses, caries prevention, early childhood caries, using chewing tobacco, fluoride, nutrition, sealants, and toothbrushing and flossing. It includes slides that can be used to localize the presentation to the various parts of the state or to reflect the cultural groups to which it is being shown. Other slides, with significantly more detailed coverage of oral conditions and their treatment, can be used with health professionals, particularly those who would be providing oral health care for children. This report addresses the gap between future challenges to improve the health of Americans and the capacity of the public health workforce to meet those challenges. Topics discussed in the context section include composition of the public health workforce, competency-based curriculum, and distance learning system development. Future directions are outlined in the areas of national, state, and local leadership as well as future trends in the topics discussed in the first section. The final section outlines implementation issues. Nine appendices contain information on the Public Health Functions Project, a mission statement on public health in America, recommendations of new occupational categories for the field of public health, descriptions of selected workforce assessment studies, competencies, the Healthy People 2000 consortium, and lists of participating work group members.

The information is presented in graph form on overhead transparencies and on 2" x 2" slides. Each graph is accompanied by a page of text that elaborates on the information in the graph.
