This resource discusses changes to gums and teeth that may occur during pregnancy and what women can do to keep their gums and teeth healthy. Topics include inflamed gums (gingivitis) and infected gums (periodontal disease). The resource conveys the following messages: keep teeth and gums clean, be gentle with gums and teeth, cut down on sweets, get regular dental care, and don't put off dental work until after delivery. The resource also provides guidance on when to schedule a dental visit.

This volume provides the primary findings from the North Carolina School Oral Health Survey. It describes the oral health of children in North Carolina public schools during the 1986–87 school year as measured by their decayed, missing, and filled teeth; the number of children with dental sealants; the children's periodontal status; and variations in conditions according to age, race, gender, degree of urbanism, geographic region, and parental education. The volume is illustrated with tables and ends with appendices on the classroom worksheet, study variables, the survey form, and the method of computing sample weights.

This chartbook includes information pertaining to the oral health and treatment needs of Native Americans. The chartbook describes some improvements that have already occurred and discusses existing problems and issues, including dental caries in the permanent teeth, dental caries in the primary teeth, periodontal disease, edentulism and tooth loss, other oral conditions, dental treatment needs, and oral health objectives for Native Americans. Extensive statistical information is presented in charts, figures, and tables throughout the chartbook. A reader evaluation and feedback form is also included.

This supplement contains the proceedings of a symposium convened to explore issues pertaining to the emerging field of oral pharmaceuticals and its impact on the dental profession. The symposium was held April 23, 1993 at the Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston, MA. The supplement contains nine papers, each written by a different author. The papers discuss topics such as the emerging field of oral pharmaceuticals, trends in the health sciences, the medical management of dental caries, pharmaceuticals and periodontal disease, insurance issues and new treatments, and oral pharmaceuticals and adult patients. Some of the papers include tables, figures, and/or illustrations.

The purpose of this peer-reviewed special journal issue is to present current estimates of the frequency and demographic distribution of selected clinical parameters of the oral health of the U.S. population based on the first 3 years of the 1988-1994 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III). The issue begins with an overview of NHANES III. The remaining papers provide updated estimates for the United States for dental caries in children, adolescents, and adults; root caries in adults; clinical parameters associated with periodontal diseases; tooth retention; the technical quality of prothseses; restorations and tooth conditions; orofacial trauma; and selected occlusal characteristics.

This information package explains the rationale and the training objectives for the Louisiana oral health program. Dentition, the parts of a tooth, dental decay, dental sealants, fluoride, periodontal disease, and oral health screening objectives are discussed for the school nurse. The sections on dental decay and fluoride also contain questions and answers for the reader. The appendices include protocol and diagnostic criteria for visual screening, related form letters, a screening data form, information about first aid for dental emergencies, and the "Healthy People 2000" national objectives. The survey is intended to give Louisiana dentists an opportunity to provide information regarding their attitudes and practices in relation to the Dental Medicaid program. The computer disk contains related files.
