This curriculum is designed to help safety net dental clinic staff improve efficiency and quality of care, meet patients' needs, and set up an infrastructure that is conducive to these activities. The series of six modules provide detailed guidelines for developing a policies and procedures manual, developing a staff handbook, and recruiting and retaining staff. The modules also present information on the importance of health records, including their vital role in malpractice cases, and on how to efficiently purchase, stock, and track supplies. In addition, the modules contain detailed information on effective appointment scheduling and on how to handle hazardous substances and plan for emergencies in the clinic setting. The modules include both national information and information specific to Ohio.

This curriculum is designed to help safety net dental clinic staff learn about all aspects of financing a safety net dental clinic and ensuring that the clinic remains financially sustainable over the long term. The series of five self-study modules present clinic staff with information about strategic planning; revenue; expenses; managing finances; and grants, contracts, and fundraising. The modules provide information about developing a business plan and include links to budget planning spreadsheet that allows users to enter and analyze data and save the analysis of the financial impacts of different decisions, assumptions, and costs. Guidance is offered on estimating revenue and expenses, developing a budget, and assessing financial sustainability. The modules also include tips on proposal writing, managing grants and contracts, and developing a fundraising plan. The modules include both national information and information specific to Ohio.

This curriculum is designed to help clinicians learn about providing oral health care to infants and children from birth through age 3. The modules provide information about prevention, risk assessment, and anticipatory guidance. Also included is guidance on how to manage children's behavior, with information on expectations, parental involvement, and helpful techniques. Providing restorative treatment is covered, with an emphasis on decision-making, positioning, restoration options, and alternatives to restoration. Finally, the modules address the management of emergency oral health care.

This manual describes the protocols and procedures for conducting an oral health survey, from preliminary planning through examinations and data management. Chapter topics include planning an oral health survey, training, examinations, and data management. The appendix includes an article on the usefulness of a local oral health survey in program development; sample notices from the Ohio Department of Health to parents about the oral health examination program; a sample permission and questionnaire form; a sample log sheet to indicate students with treatment needs; and sample results letters from the Ohio Department of Health to participating schools.

These guidelines indicate ways that clinic personnel working in Child and Family Health Services programs in Ohio can help clients improve their oral health. Focusing on oral health screening and on oral health counseling by health professionals, the guidelines include a sample oral health history, suggested procedures for screening, forms for use during counseling, and instructions relating to their implementation. Questions in the oral health history cover oral hygiene, fluoride, dental sealants, use of tobacco, and involvement in sports.

This training package is designed to make child care providers aware of their role in creating a safe and healthy environment for children in their care. The module on oral health is one of eight one-hour teaching modules prepared for child care providers to meet Ohio child care provider certification requirements. The self-contained module includes goals, learning objectives, learning strategies, evaluation criteria, teaching aids and resources, and participant handouts. The module presents information on common symptoms of teething, the importance of primary teeth, the care of children's teeth, early childhood caries, prevention of oral injuries, and appropriate responses to dental emergencies. This instructional package was designed for use by child health clinics and Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) clinics in Ohio. The package includes a notebook containing an educational flip chart for use in training sessions with parents and child care providers. It contains behavioral contracts to encourage parents to modify their current behaviors at home with their young children to help prevent development of early childhood caries. The contracts are printed on the front and back of two distinct graphic shapes; one contains reminders to promote prevention, the other encourages intervention. The package also includes magnets that remind parents to take preventive steps, and stickers for use by clinic or program staff to mark medical records after parents have been trained. A subsequent version by the American Dental Hygienists' Association does not contain the magnets and stickers included in the original version. [Funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau]
