This Health Tracks training manual for nurses was developed to help screen patients for orthodontic services and to standardize procedures statewide. Material in the manual covers (1) recognition and understanding of malocclusions, (2) screening procedures, (3) infection control, and (4) treatment options under Health Tracks. Related information in the appendix includes a glossary of terms, an orthodontic index, a list of screening supplies, a tooth eruption chart, and a reference guide.

    This information package explains the rationale and the training objectives for the Louisiana oral health program. Dentition, the parts of a tooth, dental decay, dental sealants, fluoride, periodontal disease, and oral health screening objectives are discussed for the school nurse. The sections on dental decay and fluoride also contain questions and answers for the reader. The appendices include protocol and diagnostic criteria for visual screening, related form letters, a screening data form, information about first aid for dental emergencies, and the "Healthy People 2000" national objectives. The survey is intended to give Louisiana dentists an opportunity to provide information regarding their attitudes and practices in relation to the Dental Medicaid program. The computer disk contains related files.

      This evaluation report assesses the effectiveness of Phase II of the Louisiana Oral Health Program. During this phase, 88 school nurses screened 1435 students in grade 3 for oral health problems. The report begins with an executive summary explaining the program as a whole. It continues with an introduction to Phase II that explains the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment (EPSDT) program, problems providing access to health care, and how existing screening programs for vision and hearing served as a base for the dental screenings. The report has separate sections for program objectives, methods, results, limitations, recommendations, and tables and figures. Appendices contain copies of all the forms used in the survey, responses to the survey, Healthy People 2000 goals, first aid instructions for dental emergencies, a visual screening protocol, and a copy of MCH Title V Block Grant Measure 7.

            This resource provides an overview of Tennessee's early childhood caries (ECC) prevention program for public health nurses. The program targets regular Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment visits with children at risk for ECC and is available to children and adolescents in all rural regions of Tennessee. The visits provide an opportunity for children to receive screenings, the application of fluoride varnish, and early dental referrals.

            This curriculum for nursing professionals comprises four modules on oral health and HIV infection. The modules address oral health manifestations in all clients and managing clients with HIV infection, performing an oral health history and examination, treating pain, eliminating sources of infection, identifying and diagnosing pathology, facilitating maintenance of adequate nutrition, HIV-associated oral health emergencies, and oral health maintenance and client education.

            This manual is designed to assist school nurses in providing oral health care as part of a health program comprising school health care services, comprehensive school health education, and environmental policies that support student health. Contents are organized into the following eight parts: (1) overview, (2) facts, (3) glossary, (4) screenings, (5) services and programs, (6) first aid, (7) curriculum for grades K–6, and (8) appendices. The overview presents strategies for promoting student oral health, including school- and community-based partnerships. Information on topics such as oral disease, fluorides, dental sealants, mouthguards, nutrition, risk behaviors, and pregnancy is included. The appendices contain information on videotapes and books, an English and Spanish glossary, and other oral-health- education tools and resources.

            This continuing-education activity for prenatal, oral health, and child health professionals highlights the importance of good oral health and the need for care during pregnancy and throughout early childhood. The activity comprises a multidisciplinary panel discussion, handouts, and an evaluation and post-test. Topics include (1) the impact of oral health on overall health and the development of practice guidelines by the New York State Department of Health; (2) incorporation of oral health care during pregnancy, including the scientific basis for treatment; (3) causes of tooth decay, the impact of tooth decay on family life, and prevention; and (4) how to conduct an oral health assessment during a well child visit. The activity has been approved for credit by providers of continuing education for nurses, physicians, health educators, and dentists.

            This kit contains materials to guide school nurses in conducting oral screenings of students in Ohio schools. Contents include a booklet, a DVD, and a pocket guide. The booklet provides guidance on which grade levels should participate, preparation for screening, infection control, disposal procedure, screening setup and technique, confidentiality, and documenting oral observations. A list of resources, sample forms, and a parent letter are also included. The DVD uses live action and scripted frames to guide school-based oral screening. The pocket guide presents tooth-eruption charts and photographs depicting categories of treatment need (no obvious dental problems, early dental visit needed, immediate dental visit needed) and other oral observations.
