This volume provides the primary findings from the North Carolina School Oral Health Survey. It describes the oral health of children in North Carolina public schools during the 1986–87 school year as measured by their decayed, missing, and filled teeth; the number of children with dental sealants; the children's periodontal status; and variations in conditions according to age, race, gender, degree of urbanism, geographic region, and parental education. The volume is illustrated with tables and ends with appendices on the classroom worksheet, study variables, the survey form, and the method of computing sample weights.

This report of a workshop, held August 7-8, 1991 in Atlanta, Georgia, gives information on efforts in Region IV to address issues in the oral health of children and families within the Southeastern United States. The goals of the workshop were to review the oral health status of mothers and children, to develop strategies that would make oral health service a more integral part of the total health care system and to identify personnel, resources and methods crucial to implementing the strategies. Reports from the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee are included. The states' reports include the issues identified as problems, accomplishments, the personnel or organizations to be included, and the state's plan of action to address the issues.

This manual is intended for use in North Carolina's annual survey of the oral health of school-age children by public health dental hygienists. The manual provides background on the development of the screening program and details the arrangements and staffing for the survey. Specific instructions are given for data collection, management and reporting, and referrals. The appendices contain specific information about how to assess children's oral health.

This report focuses on accessibility issues for Medicaid oral health services. It provides an overview of the problem of unmet oral health needs among groups with low incomes in North Carolina. The task force evaluated the access problem and made recommendations for strategies to assist dentists in increasing the number of their Medicaid patients, increasing patient access to quality oral health services, and expanding the capacity of local health departments and community health centers to provide more preventive oral health services.

This videotape describes the purpose and activities of the Toothbus, a mobile oral health van. The van is an outreach component of the Dental Health Program of the Ruth and Billy Graham Children's Health Center in Asheville, North Carolina. The program serves children from families with low incomes living in 10 rural counties of western North Carolina. The videotape includes interviews with oral health professionals, caregivers, and a school administrator.

This notebook for attendees is from the Maternal and Child Health Conference for Region IV, Building Partnerships to Improve Children's Access to Medicaid/CHIP Oral Health Services, held on March 3-4, 2000, in Cary, North Carolina. The notebook begins with the conference schedule and includes materials from all the presentations. Topics discussed include (1) access to dental care for children; (2) state programs to improve access to care in Indiana, Georgia, and North Carolina; (3) an overview of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), with an emphasis on North Carolina; (4) the role of various dental professionals in improving access to care; and (5) the role of public-private partnerships and litigation in improving access to care. Presentations on specific states include statistical information about poverty, racial factors, and the number of dental professionals providing care to Medicaid-enrolled children.
