This report describes alternatives for including oral health care, particularly care for children, under national health insurance plans and recommendations for oral health policy. Topics include the need for and use of oral health services, epidemiology and oral disease, the effectiveness of preventive services, oral health care expenditures, and characteristics of oral health insurance. The report concludes with a discussion of benefit priorites and their estimated costs.

This collection of papers contains a workshop planning guide including schedules of regional planning meetings, letters of invitation, and reimbursement forms. A background information section includes reprints of articles, worksheets, a sample oral health needs assessment, a sample state annual plan for maternal and child oral health, and excerpts from an application kit for the Maternal and Child Health Services Block Grant program. This report contains the results of a Nevada survey of the oral health status and treatment needs of 764 randomly selected public school students in grades 1 and 6. In addition to information about children's oral hygiene habits, the report includes sections that discuss the use of dental sealants, fluoridation, health professional access issues, and public funding. The survey was conducted for the Nevada State Health Division.

This report presents data collected from Colorado's first statewide oral health needs assessment. Topics covered in this report are: tooth decay, periodontal disease, missing teeth, gingivitis, tobacco, sealants, fluoride, school screenings, cleft palate, cleft lip, and Medicaid assistance. The report presents figures, maps, and tables to illustrate many of these topics and to document the incidence of some of these conditions statewide. An appendix contains the Healthy People 2000 oral health objectives.

The chartbook describes some improvements that have already occurred and discusses existing problems and issues, including dental caries in the permanent teeth, dental caries in the primary teeth, periodontal disease, edentulism and tooth loss, other oral conditions, dental treatment needs, and oral health objectives for Native Americans. Extensive statistical information is presented in charts, figures, and tables throughout the chartbook. A reader evaluation and feedback form is also included.

This manual explains the process of taking an oral health survey and reviews various procedures for planning and conducting an oral epidemiologic survey. The manual covers the following steps: identifying the target population and selecting the sample, gaining approval, making on-site arrangements, promoting and marketing the survey, obtaining equipment and supplies, providing for staffing and training, addressing infection control, conducting the examination, recording data, and gathering follow-up information. The manual was developed as a companion to the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors' seven-step model Assessing Oral Health Needs. [Funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau]

This report describes a survey of the oral health of three groups of school children (2nd grade, 7th grade, and 11th grade) in Connecticut. The survey sought information on the children's decayed, missing, and filled teeth, deciduous and permanent. The survey sample involved schools within each of the state's five geographic regions; the schools were stratified into three income levels (using the number of children participating in the free or reduced-cost lunch program as a proxy for economic status). The report presents survey methods, results, and recommendations.
