These conference proceedings summarize the speeches and workshop conclusions regarding unmet oral health needs of persons in Connecticut and how to address those needs. Conference speakers presented a framework of collaboration for addressing the service needs of patients and then described several pilot programs that were school based, health center based, and hospital based, including a public-private partnership and a mobile dental van. Workshops focused on practical strategies to develop similar programs within the collaboration framework.

This position paper was presented at the Building Partnerships to Improve Children's Access to Medicaid Oral Health Services National Conference held on June 2-4, 1998, in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. It discusses the prevalence and severity of oral disease, the risk factors for oral disease, and the obstacles impeding access to oral health care for certain populations. It ends with the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors' commitment to partnership with federal and state agencies to address children's oral health problems.

This report reviews eight place-based initiatives that focus on young children, include a health component, and feature two-way linkages into and out of the health sector. The goals of the report are to link children and families to services needed to promote growth and development and to assist stakeholders in identifying, understanding, and promoting the role of health and the health sector within multi-sector, place-based initiatives that serve children and their families. The report provides information on the context, methodology, and conceptual underpinnings for the study; descriptions of each initiative; cross-initiative findings and assessment; and summary findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

This report describes the objectives and activities of a statewide program to promote community water fluoridation to reduce oral disease in Michigan including the timeframes for each activity, the progress made to-date, and measures of performance. Topics include collaboration (interdepartmental agreement) between the state Department of Community Health and Department of Environmental Quality to increase community water fluoridation and fluoridation surveillance measures; activities of the Michigan Oral Health Coalitions' Fluoridation Advisory Committee; and program support (equipment grants) to help communities maintain community water fluoridation.

This report presents recommendations for changes at the federal level to improve the health and academic performance of students in public elementary and secondary schools. The report begins with a discussion of health barriers to learning and educationally relevant health disparities including illness and injury, asthma, mental health issues, obesity, sexual health issues, vision and hearing impairment, and oral disease. Additional topics include preparing teachers and principals to promote student health and wellness, engaging parents to improve outcomes, incorporating health and wellness into school metrics and accountability, incorporating health and wellness into recognition programs, building capacity within the U.S. Department of Education to address student health and wellness, and placing a school nurse in every school.
