This resource presents the American Dental Association's (ADA) clinical recommendations for practitioners to use in conjunction with their clinical judgment and their clients' needs and preferences to make evidence-based treatment decisions. Topics include the process used to develop evidence-based clinical recommendations, non-fluoride caries preventive agents, reconstituting infant formula, screening for oral cancer, dental sealants, and topical fluoride. Evidence-based guidelines from external agencies are also provided on topics such as infective endocarditis and tobacco.

These proceedings discuss the establishment of guidelines for practicing dentists on dental care for the mentally retarded child. This document defines mental retardation clinics, discusses their current status, and their legal basis. This document presents Public Health Service (PHS) guidelines regarding the most acceptable dental public health practices for improving children's oral health. In making its recommendations, the PHS aim is to improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of children's oral health services in public programs. This report outlines five steps in selecting the sites and children for the occlusal dental sealant program in New York state. Additional information discusses guidelines for the application of sealants to specific teeth. The appendix includes a calculation table for determining the socioeconomics of the area and a sample site visit evaluation form.

This technical report focuses on the December 1997 meeting of the World Health Organization Expert Committee on Monitoring and Evaluation of Oral Health. The committee's task was to identify the essential elements of monitoring and evaluation and to provide clear guidance for the development of detailed procedures. The report opens with an introduction and includes the following chapters: (1) an essential oral health care model, (2) oral health care information management, (3) monitoring and management for special groups, (4) monitoring the cost and quality of oral health care, (5) monitoring oral health programs, (6) health systems research needs for oral health, and (7) recommendations and conclusions. The report includes three "annexes" (appendices), which contain an evaluation of oral health programs, a checklist for assessing the evaluation system, and oral health in the Strategy for Health for All. The report includes a variety of figures, tables, and charts.

These guidelines indicate ways that clinic personnel working in Child and Family Health Services programs in Ohio can help clients improve their oral health. Focusing on oral health screening and on oral health counseling by health professionals, the guidelines include a sample oral health history, suggested procedures for screening, forms for use during counseling, and instructions relating to their implementation. Questions in the oral health history cover oral hygiene, fluoride, dental sealants, use of tobacco, and involvement in sports.
