These resources are intended for use in implementing school-based oral health screenings to identify emergent needs in preschool and school-age children in Montana. Contents include a manual, a 20-minute training video for those performing the screening, a screening form and data entry instructions, a parent consent letter, a feedback survey, and a report card.

This resource provides evidence-based recommendations and findings about what works to improve public oral health. Strategies are reviewed and interventions outlined in three key areas: (1) prevention of dental caries; (2) prevention of oral and pharyngeal cancers; and (3) prevention of oral and facial injuries. Recommendations include community water fluoridation, school-based or -linked dental sealant delivery programs, early cancer detection, and the use of protective gear for the head and the mouth during contact sports.

This resource provides information on efforts to provide oral health-related prevention services, including screenings, fluoride varnish applications, and dental sealants, to students in Mississippi schools. It describes dental sealants, how the program works and who is eligible, and how schools and oral health professionals can get involved. A program flyer, enrollment forms for schools and providers, a parental consent form, and an oral health evaluation results form are also included.

These are the proceedings of a conference focusing on trends in preventing dental caries held October 27-28, 1980. Presentations and panel discussions centered on the use of fluoride; its mechanism of action, efficacy, and safety; alternative methods of delivering fluoride, educational and promotional aids designed to encourage self-applied programs, barriers to and solutions in implementing school-based fluoride programs; the use of adhesive sealants, the role of sugars in dental caries, and new research on caries prevention.

This resource summarizes a National Institute of Health-sponsored Consensus Development Conference held on December 5-7, 1983, to evaluate the effectiveness, safety, and implementation of dental sealants. Topics include the use of fluorides, caries experience among children, and the need for sealants; sealant effectiveness; risks associated with the use of sealants; indications for using sealants in individual and community-based caries prevention programs; clinical procedures involved in successful sealant application and the training and education required; factors influencing the adoption and use of sealants for caries prevention; and research priorities for sealants and their implementation. Minority opinion and information about the panel participants, planning committee, and sponsors is included.

This special issue of the Journal of Dental Education is dedicated to the Consensus Development Conference on Diagnosis and Management of Dental Caries Throughout Life, held December 5-7, 1983 at the National Institutes of Health in Rockville, MD. Included are lists of members of the planning committee and the consensus development panel as well as manuscript reviewers. In addition to welcoming remarks, introductions, and an agenda, 34 conference papers with references are included. Section topics include an overview of the current status of dental caries, the effectiveness of dental sealants, safety considerations, strategies for implementation, the adoption and use of sealants, and future directions. The final two sections include presentations from six organizations, the Consensus Development Conference Statement that addresses six key questions about dental caries, and the conference schedule. An appendix offering search strategies for questions by independent reviewers is also included.
