The booklet provides instructions to ensure the oral hygiene of children with special health needs, including physical and mental disabilities. Written to help caregivers, parents, and the children themselves, the booklet addresses the eruption of primary teeth and permanent teeth, dental emergencies, and preventive measures including good nutrition and the use fluoride and sealants. The booklet describes conditions such as plaque, calculus, tooth decay, and periodontal diseases; presents techniques for brushing and flossing; and discusses special dental equipment and the positioning of the patient for oral hygiene.

This videotape was developed to train people responsible for the oral hygiene of another person. It includes information on the importance of oral health, ways of providing oral hygiene care for others, and specific instructions for working with individuals with special health conditions or those who are uncooperative. A booklet that accompanies the videotape contains information on toothbrushing, flossing, marking dentures for identification, and sensory defensiveness. The booklet also includes a quiz for use before and after viewing the videotape to ascertain the viewer's level of comprehension.

This book examines the need for and means to provide mobile dental services to institutional populations. It begins with an overview of mobile dentistry and the physical components essential to delivery of dental services. The second section discusses staffing and support components and includes chapters on the role of various staff of long-term care facilities in providing dental care. The third section explains techniques and systems to overcome barriers to care in nontraditional settings. The last section looks at mobile missionary programs. Appendices include a resource guide and an exposure control plan.

This kit is intended to train caregivers to recognize and prevent oral diseases in individuals with special health care needs, to identify obstacles to oral health for a given individual, to use behavioral techniques to improve oral hygiene skills and independence, and to develop and carry out an oral health care plan. The kit contains a 10- minute videotape demonstrating oral health and behavioral techniques; a trainer's manual with instructions on how to use the materials; two workbooks with 11 chapters, review questions, and class and home exercises; and a 60-item pre- and post- training test to assess knowledge.

Increasing numbers of children, especially children of the working poor, spend their early developmental years in the care of someone other than their parents. The health issues of this population include dental problems, poor nutritional status, and communicable disease. The Child Care Health Promotion Project addressed the health needs of children in child care centers in Rio Arriba and McKinley Counties. The project trained parents and child care providers in the areas of nutrition, dental health, physical fitness, mental health, and prevention of communicable disease.
