This information package contains materials to assist dentists and their staffs in educating parents about the value of early intervention to prevent infant oral health problems, especially early childhood caries. It includes a videotape to acquaint the dentist and staff with the concepts of early intervention and with the program, a packet of risk-assessment interview forms, a packet of parent information forms, a laminated patient education flip chart, an anticipatory guidance chart for infants and children from birth to age 3, a reference card, a tent card for the reception area, a poster, and a first oral health exam bookmark for parents.

This curriculum is designed to assist health professionals in managing the oral health of infants and young children. The modules include information on performing oral screenings to identify infants and children at increased risk for oral health problems, offering referrals to oral health professionals, and providing parents with anticipatory guidance. Module titles are (1) an introduction to infants' and young children's oral health, (2) managing infants' and young children's oral health, (3) oral conditions and abnormalities, (4) prevention of oral disease, (5) nonnutritive sucking habits, (6) oral injury, and (7) infants and young children with special health care needs. This manual provides health professionals with information on women's oral health needs during the prenatal period to promote maternal oral health and early childhood caries prevention. Section 1 includes information on conducting an oral screening, risk assessment checklists for determining maternal periodontal disease and caries risk, training pretest and posttest materials, printed presentation slides, and instructions about providing anticipatory guidance. The section also includes reproducible handouts. Section 2 contains resources and information for providing services, such as early childhood caries screenings, to infants and young children. Information includes risk assessment checklists for identifying children at high risk for developing tooth decay, and testing and presentation materials. Information is also provided on fluoride varnish application instructions and protocols. Additional forms, materials, and resources are included, as well.

This paper explains the epidemiology of dental caries in preschool-age children, discusses indicators of caries risk in this population, and sets forth requirements for providing primary prevention of caries in preschool-age children, especially those at high risk for caries. The paper describes the consequences of caries in preschool-age children, the mechanisms of the carious process, caries risk and anticipatory guidance, preventive strategies, and delivery of diagnostic and preventive therapies. Statistical information is presented in tables throughout the paper.

This kit, developed for use by health professionals, describes the Smile Alabama! 1st Look Initiative, an oral health program for children eligible for Medicaid. The kit is intended to raise health professionals' awareness of children's oral health needs and to encourage health professionals to implement oral health screening, anticipatory guidance, and referral for children at risk for having unmet oral health care needs. The kit includes an article on the importance of good oral health habits and the consequences of poor habits, brochures on the role of the dentist and regular oral health visits and on the importance of proper toothbrushing and nutrition for infants and young children, promotional materials for the office, and anticipatory guidance cards and a risk assessment chart based on national guidelines.

This case study, based on key informant interviews conducted in spring 2005, describes how Georgia has used Bright Futures as part of an effort to improve child health indicators and how Bright Futures has been incorporated into Medicaid well-child exams delivered by local health departments, especially to enhance anticipatory guidance. The case study also describes how the state has used Bright Futures as part of its effort to improve child health in the areas of mental health and oral health. The case study discusses the context for Bright Futures, initiating Bright Futures, the evolution of Bright Futures over time, challenges, lessons learned, and sustainability and future directions.
