This toolkit provides information and resources for dental hygienists in Massachusetts to expand opportunities for providing preventive oral health services in public health settings. Training resources include presentations on infection control, other documents and resources, evidence-based clinical recommendations for dental sealants and sealant programs and other sealant program resources, and an introduction to the state Medicaid program, MassHealth.

This report provides an overview of the dental hygiene work force in Massachusetts as surveyed in 2007. Survey topics include number of years in practice, degrees earned, work settings, wages and benefits, work availability, groups served, and certification. Contents include a description of the study methods and results, a discussion, highlights from the survey, and recommendations. Appendices include a brief history of dental hygiene as a profession, a list of Massachusetts dental hygiene schools, a review of state Medicaid programs that reimburse dental hygienists directly for services rendered, and the 29-item survey instrument. Statistical data are provided in figures throughout the report.

This training prepares health professionals to participate in the MassHealth fluoride varnish program. Topics include the child health professional’s role in oral health, the etiology of oral diseases, the relationship between systemic and oral health, performing oral health assessments, identifying appropriate oral-disease-prevention strategies, and understanding when and how to apply fluoride varnish. The training includes links to online pre- and post-tests and information about receiving the BLOCK Oral Disease Toolkit. A fact sheet for health professionals and anticipatory guidance for caregivers, including an active consent form, are also available. Information for caregivers is available in multiple languages.
