This report summarizes the findings and recommendations from an assessment of oral health needs among California's children in 1993–94. The assessment revealed a virtual epidemic of untreated oral diseases in the sample of more than 6, 600 California children ranging in age from preschool through grade 12. The report presents a strategic plan to achieve oral health and includes an appendix of project support personnel and schools participating in the assessment.

    This statewide oral health plan is intended to provide a framework for the development and implementation of work plan activities at the public health district and central office levels, in cooperation with other state agencies and the private sector. The plan is organized by major oral health problem areas: dental caries; periodontal disease, gingivitis, and periodontitis; oral cancer; and transmissible diseases. A summary of the problem, impact objectives, process objectives, and the method of evaluation are outlined for each problem area.

      This brochure describes the importance of proper oral health during pregnancy, the risks that gum disease can pose to both a pregnant woman and her developing infant, and how gum disease may contribute to premature delivery or low birthweight. The brochure provides advice on nutrition, oral hygiene, vaccination, use of multivitamins, avoiding smoking and alcohol use, exercise, and the use of seatbelts. Also discussed are the importance of seeing an oral health professional before and during pregnancy and how pregnancy can affect the teeth and gums.

Topics include inflamed gums (gingivitis) and infected gums (periodontal disease). The resource conveys the following messages: keep teeth and gums clean, be gentle with gums and teeth, cut down on sweets, get regular dental care, and don't put off dental work until after delivery. Information about gum infection during pregnancy and tips for preventing gum disease is provided. The importance of a healthy diet that includes plenty of calcium and Vitamin D is also addressed.         This videotape and guidebook, which are geared toward African Americans, are intended to help families prevent oral health problems, protect children's teeth, find affordable oral health care, and strive to keep their teeth for a lifetime. The booklet and videotape cover the following topics: (1) tooth decay and gum disease, (2) fighting plaque, (3) protecting children's oral health, (4) healthy mouths, (5) oral cancer, (6) tooth appearance, (7) African Americans in dentistry, (8) questions to ask the dentist, and (9) resources for more information. The videotape, which features television and movie celebrities Blair Underwood and Nia Long, was produced by the American Dental Association in collaboration with the National Dental Association and the Congress of National Black Churches, Inc.
