Pediatric Oral Health-Related Quality of Life Improvement After Treatment of Early Childhood Caries: A Prospective Multisite Study
This journal article presents findings from a study to assess parent-reported oral-health-related quality of life (QOL) in children with and without early childhood caries (ECC). Children with ECC were rated by their parents as having worse oral-health-related QOL than were children without ECC. The positive effects of oral health intervention for children with ECC were significant at the 6- and 12-month follow-ups and enhanced QOL in multiple domains. Some differences between children with and without ECC persisted after treatment.

The Risk of Enamel Fluorosis and Caries Among Norwegian Children: Implications for Norway and the United States
This journal article explores the association between early fluoride-use behaviors and subsequent dental caries in the permanent dentition. The authors describe study findings supporting the recommendation that dentists should advise use of fluoride supplementation only after performing a caries risk assessment and discussing with the parent or guardian the potential benefits of fluoride supplementation and the associated risk of enamel fluorosis. The findings also suggest that use of a pea-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste by preschool-age children is associated with a substantial reduction in caries risk without elevating risk of fluorosis development.
