5. Associations Between Dental Fluorosis of the Permanent
and Primary Dentitions
Levy et al. reported on the association between the prevalence of
dental fluorosis of the early-erupting permanent teeth and the primary
molars, and they explore these relationships while controlling for
individual fluoride intakes. There was a strong association between
mostly mild primary and permanent tooth fluorosis prevalence. Findings
suggest that identification of primary molar fluorosis during the
preschool years should alert oral health professionals and parents to
the strong likelihood of fluorosis in the permanent incisors.

6. Periodontitis and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus:
Exploring the Link in NHANES III
Novak et al. analyzed data collected in the Third National Health and
Nutrition Examination Survey and compared the prevalence of periodontal
disease in pregnant women with a history of gestational diabetes
mellitus (GDM) vs. pregnant women without GDM. Women with a history of
GDM were more likely to have more severe periodontal disease than women
with a history of pregnancies without GDM.
