4. The Oral Health of Children: A Portrait of States and
the Nation 2005
This chartbook highlights the major findings of the 2003 National
Survey of Children's Health on the oral health and use of oral health
services among children and adolescents from birth to age 17 as
reported by participating parents. Survey findings are presented for
each state and the District of Columbia. Findings include the
percentage of children and adolescents whose teeth are reported by
their parents to be in excellent or good condition and the percentage
of children who received a preventive oral health care visit in the
past year. The indicators are also shown by children's age, family
income, race and ethnicity, and sex. The technical appendix presents
information about the survey sample and methodology. The online version
of the chartbook includes an interactive data query feature, which
allows users to create their own customized tables and to compare
survey results at the national and state levels and by relevant
subgroups such as age, race and ethnicity, and family income. [Funded

7. Health Status and Health Service Access and Use Among
Children in U.S. Immigrant Families
These analyses examined data from the 1999 National Survey of America's
Families, which measured parent-reported health status and health care
access and service use among children in U.S. immigrant families. Among
children and adolescents (ages 3-17) born in the United States whose
parents were noncitizens, nearly one third had not visited a dentist
within the previous year; nearly half of their foreign-born
counterparts had not visited a dentist. Among children from families
with low incomes, children who were foreign-born (citizens or
non-citizens) were less likely than children who were U.S.-born to have
Medicaid, State Children’s Health Insurance Program, or other state
coverage.
