The curriculum, Special Care: An Oral Health Professional’s Guide to Serving Young Children with Special Health Care Needs, is designed to provide oral health professionals with information to help ensure that young children with special health care needs have access to health promotion and disease prevention services that address their unique oral health needs in a comprehensive, family-centered, and community-based manner.
The curriculum was prepared by Ruth Barzel and Katrina Holt of the National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center (OHRC) at Georgetown University with assistance from Beverly Isman, independent consultant. Jason McGovern of the Center for Advanced Distance Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago designed the curriculum. Curriculum content was adapted from the Planning Guide for Dental Professionals Serving Children with Special Health Care Needs, prepared by Beverly Isman and Renee Nolte Newton, independent consultants, with assistance from Cary Bujold and Marion Taylor Baer of the University of Southern California, University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. Development of these materials was supported by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Health Resources and Services Administration (grant number MCJ06R005, contract number 240020003, and contract number AWD2462206).
Sincere appreciation is due to the parents and professionals who helped develop, review, and field test the materials contained in the planning guide (for a list of individuals, see http://www.mchoralhealth.org/pdfs/ohguide.pdf) as well as to the following individuals who contributed to and reviewed the Special Care curriculum.
