4.1 Fluorides
Fluoridated Toothpaste
Instruct parents to brush the child’s teeth at least twice a day. Demonstrate how to apply no more than a pea-sized amount (small smear) of fluoridated toothpaste, and advise them to prevent ingestion of toothpaste whenever possible. For children who cannot spit, let them drool into a cup. If the child persists in swallowing the toothpaste, parents may consider using a non-fluoridated toothpaste as long as the child is receiving other sources of fluoride.
Fluoride Rinses
Fluoride rinses are generally recommended only for children who can swish for 1 minute and spit. Many children with oral motor dysfunction tend to swallow the rinse, so another form of fluoride should be used. The rinse can also be applied with a cotton swab or Toothette®. Alcohol-free rinses should be used with children.
