The oral examination can be conducted in the dental chair; in a wheelchair or stroller; or using the two-person, knee-to-knee position. The choice depends on the child’s size, level of cooperation, and physical condition.

Oral Examination
The oral examination should assess for the following:
  • Enamel hypoplasia and enamel demineralization (white spots)
  • Presence and severity of dental caries
  • Developmental anomalies, delayed tooth eruption, and malocclusion
  • Diseases of the gingiva and other soft tissues
  • Oral reflexes and oral sensitivity
  • Oral injuries
