3.2 Oral Examination
The oral examination can be conducted in the dental chair; in a wheelchair or stroller; or using the two-person, knee-to-knee position. The choice depends on the child’s size, level of cooperation, and physical condition.
The oral examination should assess for the following:
- Enamel hypoplasia and enamel demineralization (white spots)
- Presence and severity of dental caries
- Developmental anomalies, delayed tooth eruption, and malocclusion
- Diseases of the gingiva and other soft tissues
- Oral reflexes and oral sensitivity
- Oral injuries
