Module 4: What to Do and How to Do It

4.6 What is Oral Health Anticipatory Guidance? (continued)

Anticipatory Guidance to Share with Parents of Children (Ages 1 to 5)

To promote oral health, professionals can also

  • Distribute educational oral health materials in a variety of languages and at a variety of reading levels. (See Online Resources.)
  • Play educational oral health videotapes in the waiting room or in another common area. (See Tools.)

Suggestions for Healthy Snacks:

  • Raw vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, celery, cucumbers, dill pickles, or peppers
  • Whole grain products
  • Milk
  • Cheese
  • Unsweetened yogurt with or without fresh fruit

For infants and children under age 3, foods that cause choking should be avoided. Children between ages 3 and 5 may eat these foods if the foods are prepared to make them safer (for example, chopping raw carrots or celery finely or into thin strips).
