Module 2: Risk Factors for Tooth Decay

2.4 Can Parents’ Behavior Increase an Infant’s or Child’s Risk for Tooth Decay?

  • Some parents view the bottle as a good way to keep an infant or child quiet and occupied during difficult times; the bottle may stop an infant or child from crying.
  • A parent with serious daily life stresses may not be able to make an infant’s or child’s oral health a high priority. The infant or child may be less likely to be taken to visit the dentist, may not be encouraged to practice good oral hygiene habits such as regular toothbrushing, and may be more likely to snack frequently on foods high in sugar.
  • Some parents believe it is cruel to deny an infant or child a bottle or snacks.
