Stanton H. WolfeSTANTON H. WOLFE: First of all, I recommend that you congratulate mom, she’s juggling a difficult situation with work, the kids, and so on. The one thing I am concerned about, though, is her oral health. If her oral health is poor, then her general health is poor. And, actually, baby can catch the bacteria that cause tooth decay from mom. So let’s help mom by helping her improve her oral health.

She should get to her dentist more regularly. If she doesn’t have a dentist, we should help her try to find one, and perhaps even help her to get the right kind of dental insurance if necessary. We should help her learn how to brush better and when to brush, most importantly after meals and mainly before bed. To use a fluoridated toothpaste, to use dental floss. And we can show her how to use dental floss, and to eat better. And the most important thing in her diet is to reduce the sugar and carbohydrates, and to eat regular meals. Don’t snack in between meals. Then mom’s health will be better, and possibly baby’s.
