Head StartHow should Head Start programs document children's oral examinations and progress in completing needed follow-up care? Head Start programs must keep children's health records. They must also track the provision of oral health care. Head Start staff and parents work with dentists to make sure that after the child receives an oral examination, a copy of the examination results is placed in the child's health record. The child's health record contains a copy of the follow-up plan for any needed care. The record also contains information about fluoride supplements that the child may need and about the child's participation in oral health preventive care activities. Some of these activities might be fluoride varnish, xylitol gum, and dental sealant programs. The oral examination is the best way to show that the Head Start program has met the Head Start Program Performance Standard for determining the child's oral health status. The oral examination is also the best way to show whether the child is up to date on a schedule of age-appropriate preventive and primary oral health care. Such a schedule must incorporate the requirements for a schedule of well-child care used by the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment (EPSDT) program.
